Enchanted

“Enchanted” is a delightful live-action/animated fantasy film released in 2007, directed by Kevin Lima. It follows the story of Giselle, a classic Disney princess archetype, who is forced from her animated fairy tale world into the bustling and pragmatic reality of modern-day New York City.

Giselle, played by Amy Adams, lives in the animated kingdom of Andalasia and is betrothed to Prince Edward (James Marsden). However, their happily-ever-after is interrupted by Edward’s evil stepmother, Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon), who banishes Giselle to a live-action New York City.

In the real world, Giselle discovers that life isn’t quite as simple as the fairy tales depict. She encounters Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey), a cynical yet kind-hearted divorce lawyer, and his young daughter, Morgan. Despite her initial confusion and naivety about the real world, Giselle’s optimism and kindness begin to win over those she meets.

As Giselle navigates this strange new environment, she brings her trademark optimism and fairy tale magic to the lives of those around her, including Robert and his daughter. However, her presence also attracts attention back in Andalasia, leading to complications and a clash between the fantastical animated world and the pragmatic reality of New York City.

The film cleverly combines traditional animation and live-action sequences, paying homage to classic Disney fairy tales while also satirizing some of their conventions. It’s a charming and heartwarming story that blends fantasy, romance, humor, and musical elements, offering a whimsical take on the collision between fairy tale ideals and the complexities of the real world. Amy Adams’ portrayal of Giselle is particularly praised for capturing the essence of a classic Disney princess while adding depth and humor to the character. Overall, “Enchanted” is a joyful and entertaining family film that celebrates the magic of love and the power of happily-ever-afters in a modern setting.
